By the second week, the routine had become a kind of religion: wake, listen, count, go.
There is a discipline to living beside something you do not understand. You do not stare at it. You keep your ordinary hours. You greet your neighbours. You do the small things properly, because the small things are the only fence you have.
"You are too calm," someone said, and meant it as an accusation.
Calm is not the absence of fear. Calm is fear that has agreed to be useful.
