The tailor came at noon, when the market's roof made the whole aisle smell like hot iron.
He did not pretend. He stood in front of the stall with his cap in both hands and said, "Your mother helped me. I have two thousand today. I will bring the rest."
Ngozi opened the ledger, found his name, and drew a line through it.
"Keep your two thousand," she said. "Come back on Thursday and tell me who else she helped."
By Thursday, there were nine of them outside the stall, and not one of them had come to pay.
